Rolex Lady-Datejust: Sizes, Bracelets and Buying Checks

The Rolex Lady-Datejust offers a compact date display with a wide range of visual combinations. For a buyer, that variety makes the complete configuration important: case size, metal, bezel, dial and bracelet should all be identified before comparing prices. A family name alone cannot tell you what is being offered, and a watch that looks right in a catalogue may still need a careful fitting on your wrist.

Get the name and size right

The Lady-Datejust and the wider Datejust range should not be treated as interchangeable names. For a purchase, establish which generation and reference you are viewing rather than assuming every Lady-Datejust has the dimensions of a modern example. A precise description prevents comparing watches with materially different proportions.

Rolex’s brochure for reference 279173 specifies a 28 mm case in Oystersteel and yellow gold.[27] The 279171 is also a 28 mm Lady-Datejust, using Oystersteel and Everose gold.[33] By contrast, reference 278271 is a Datejust 31, with a 31 mm case.[28] It is a related buying alternative, not the same model renamed.

Bracelet type is not a metal description

Oyster and Jubilee refer to bracelet designs. In the brochures used here, the Oyster has three-piece links and the Jubilee has five-piece links.[28][33] Oystersteel describes a material. Calling a bracelet simply an Oystersteel bracelet can therefore leave its actual construction unclear, particularly when comparing mixed-metal versions.

Try both designs if possible. Look at how the links follow your wrist, where the clasp sits and whether the fit remains comfortable as your hand moves. A buyer may prefer the quieter visual rhythm of broad links or the more detailed appearance of the Jubilee. There is no requirement to choose a bracelet because it is portrayed as the traditional women’s option.

Dial and bezel choices need exact identification

A fluted bezel, a smooth bezel and a gem-set bezel change the appearance considerably. So do different dial colours and hour markers. Check the full configuration against the reference and supporting documents rather than relying on a generic image. Ask whether any dial or gem-setting changes were made after production and how they are disclosed.

Read the dial in ordinary light. Diamond markers, Roman numerals and other decorative choices should be judged for your own readability requirements, not assumed to offer the same visibility. Avoid a broad claim that all hands and markers are luminous. Features can vary by configuration and should be confirmed for the actual watch.

Inspect the mechanics and the fit

The 279173 and 278271 brochures identify a self-winding calibre 2236 with an approximate 55-hour power reserve.[27][28] Those specifications do not diagnose the movement in a used example. Ask for current assessment, service details and a demonstration of the date and setting functions. If you have not owned an automatic watch, discuss winding and resetting as part of the viewing.

Check for spare links, bracelet wear and clasp operation. Request information about case polishing and replacement parts. Read the documents carefully, but do not treat boxes or papers as proof that the watch itself is genuine. A qualified inspection remains part of a responsible purchase.

Make a short, useful comparison

Start with the Rolex collection and compare a listed 28 mm example with a listed Datejust 31. Stock and configurations change, so confirm both before visiting. Our 28 mm and 31 mm comparison offers further guidance. Choose the watch you can read and wear comfortably, with condition and an RM price you understand.
