The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711’s final chapter is not simply a story about a blue dial. It combines the end of a well-known reference with a limited edition marking a long retail partnership. To understand it properly, keep the ordinary 5711 variants, the olive-green release and the Tiffany Blue edition distinct.
Patek Philippe’s December 2021 announcement identifies the Tiffany edition as reference 5711/1A-018, limited to 170 watches to mark 170 years of its alliance with Tiffany & Co.[21] Those verified details are more useful than claims that every 5711 is equally rare or should be bought for investment.
The 5711 belongs to a longer Nautilus history
Patek Philippe’s 2021 Nautilus material dates the collection to 1976 and the steel 5711/1A to 2006, the collection’s thirtieth anniversary.[22] The 5711 was therefore a chapter in the Nautilus story, not the beginning of it.
The April 2021 release introduced an olive-green sunburst dial for reference 5711/1A-014 and announced that 2021 would be the last production year of the steel 5711/1A.[22] The later Tiffany announcement said the model would be retired from the collection in 2022.[21] Keep these dated statements in context rather than presenting them as contradictory rumours.
What makes the Tiffany edition identifiable
The manufacturer describes a Tiffany Blue lacquer dial with horizontal Nautilus embossing. The dual signatures place Patek Philippe at 12 o’clock and Tiffany & Co. at 6 o’clock. The caseback bears an anniversary inscription.[21] These are reference-specific details, not a licence to identify any similarly coloured dial as genuine.
Patek Philippe stated that the edition would be distributed through Tiffany boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills and San Francisco that carried the brand.[21] That was the launch distribution arrangement. It does not establish present availability at any dealer.
A rare configuration deserves more scrutiny, not less. Ask for the precise reference, documentation and an expert review of the watch and its dial before relying on the colour or signatures.
Movement details depend on the example
The Tiffany release specifies calibre 26-330 S C with a stop-seconds mechanism. Patek’s April release states that the calibre had powered the 5711 since 2019.[21][22] Earlier examples should not automatically be described with those later specifications.
The launch press release gave the Tiffany watch a 120-metre water-resistance specification.[21] This is a historical specification for that model, not confirmation of present sealing condition or guidance to swim with an unassessed pre-owned example. Seek condition-specific advice before water use.
Inspect the bracelet as carefully as the dial
Request clear photographs of the bezel, case edges, bracelet links and clasp. Ask about polishing, repairs and replaced components. Check that the bracelet can be sized correctly for you and identify any missing links.
Do not assume a tidy box establishes originality. Ask what documents and accessories actually accompany the watch, how they correspond with it and whether service records are available.
Choose the watch, not the finale narrative
A discontinued reference and limited edition can be historically interesting without offering predictable resale returns. Obtain a current RM quote and compare evidence, condition and terms, rather than repeating a famous auction headline.
If the Tiffany version is outside your needs or budget, assess other Nautilus references on their own merits. The 5711’s final chapter is worth knowing; it should not pressure you into a purchase that only makes sense if prices rise.
