A convincing photograph is not an authentication report. When buying a pre-owned Rolex, reduce risk by checking the seller, identifying the precise watch and arranging a competent inspection before payment. No single visual detail, serial number or document should carry the whole decision.
This guide is a buying checklist, not a method for certifying a watch at home. If the information is inconsistent or the seller will not allow a suitable examination, pause the purchase. Missing a watch is preferable to committing money before you understand what is being sold.
Start with the seller and transaction
Ask who is issuing the invoice and what the written description covers. It should identify the watch, price and disclosed condition. Confirm the inspection arrangements, payment recipient and any applicable return or warranty terms before transferring funds. Do not substitute an informal message promising ‘all original’ for a detailed description.
A physical shop gives you a place to inspect a watch, but its existence is not proof of authenticity. Judge the evidence and the clarity of the transaction. Be cautious about pressure to pay immediately, explanations that keep changing or requests to send money to an unrelated person.
Establish the reference before comparing details
Request the model reference and clear photographs of the dial, bezel, case, bracelet and clasp. Compare those with manufacturer material for the correct generation. Rolex’s Submariner documentation, for example, distinguishes the time-only calibre 3230 from the date-model calibre 3235.[11] Similar-looking watches do not necessarily share components.
Ask whether the dial, hands, bezel or bracelet have been replaced and whether any parts are aftermarket. A genuine watch with later service parts is a different description from an untouched example. A genuine watch customised with non-original parts also needs specific disclosure. Avoid collapsing these questions into one yes-or-no label.
Treat documents as supporting evidence
Check whether the reference and identifying information on supplied documents correspond with the watch. Ask what the box, card and receipts actually represent. Documents can help reconstruct a history; they cannot replace examination of the physical item. A watch-only listing should be priced and evaluated as such, not dismissed automatically or presented as a complete set.
Do not publish a watch’s full identifying details unnecessarily. Share inspection information through a controlled channel, with the seller’s knowledge where appropriate.
Know what professional inspection should address
Ask the inspecting professional to consider the exterior, movement, configuration and signs of repair or alteration. Opening a case requires appropriate tools and permission; do not try it yourself. Clarify the scope and limits of any report, including whether functionality and water resistance were tested separately.
The familiar ‘sweeping hand’ or weight comparison is not sufficient. A timing observation tells you how a watch behaves, not whether every part is genuine and correct for that reference.
Understand the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned distinction
Rolex’s own Certified Pre-Owned programme is offered through participating Official Retailers and includes a distinct seal, guarantee card and two-year international guarantee.[13] That is a specific manufacturer programme, not a generic description for any dealer-inspected used Rolex.
Prestige Watch is an independent watch retailer. Ask what inspection information and purchase terms apply to the individual watch, without assuming manufacturer certification. Clear disclosure, a meaningful examination and a documented transaction are the sensible basis for deciding whether to proceed.
Compare watches and ask questions
Browse the Rolex collection for current listings. If an existing watch is part of your decision, read about selling your watch and request an individual assessment. Availability, condition and included accessories vary by watch.
