The auction story about a Rolex Submariner 5512 is a useful lesson in why vintage watches cannot be valued by reference number alone. The example attracted attention for its unusual 3-6-9 dial and documented family history. It should not be treated as a benchmark for every 5512, much less a prediction about an ordinary Submariner.
The original headline quoted an auction figure and a fixed RM conversion. The auctioneer’s own report gives a different total including buyer’s premium.[19] The safer account explains the watch and the reporting basis without repeating an unsupported currency conversion.
What made this watch unusual
Gardiner Houlgate described the watch as a Submariner 5512 with an exceptionally rare Explorer-style 3-6-9 dial. Its report states that it sold to a Hong Kong-based client after international bidding.[19] Those details concern this particular example, not the entire reference family.
The auctioneer says the original owner, a medical attendant at the former Shirebrook Colliery, bought it in 1964 for his fortieth birthday. It later passed through his family.[19] That is documented reporting by the auctioneer; it is not a customer story about Prestige Watch.
The story’s interest is the combination of a particular dial and a traceable ownership account. Remove either, and the comparison with another watch becomes less straightforward.
Why originality receives attention
The auctioneer noted that these 3-6-9 dials were produced for a short period and that many were replaced during servicing.[19] A replacement dial may be part of a watch’s legitimate maintenance history, but it can change what a collector is buying.
For a vintage enquiry, ask which components are considered original and what evidence supports that assessment. ‘Correct for the period’, ‘original to the watch’ and ‘manufacturer service replacement’ are different descriptions. A useful condition report should distinguish them.
Do not attempt to improve a vintage watch’s appearance before getting advice. Cleaning, polishing or replacing a component can change the very details a specialist would want to examine. Preservation and everyday usability may require different choices.
Hammer price and total paid are different measures
An auction headline can report the hammer price, the final total with premium or an estimate before sale. These are not interchangeable. Gardiner Houlgate’s account specifically identifies a premium-inclusive result.[19] This explains why two reports of the same sale can appear inconsistent.
Currency adds another layer. A historical conversion depends on its date, rate and whether fees were included. It should not be recycled as today’s RM valuation. When considering a Malaysian transaction, ask for a current RM quote based on the exact watch instead.
How to assess another vintage Submariner
Request a detailed dial photograph, case and bezel views, movement assessment where appropriate and any service documents. Ask about refinishing, corrosion, replacement parts and the limitations of the provenance record. A familiar reference can contain very different examples.
A specialist should review the watch before payment if originality is central to the price. Ask for a condition report that separates observation from inference. Do not assume a vintage factory depth rating establishes present-day water resistance.

A rare auction result reflects one watch, one sale and competing buyers at that moment. Your purchase should stand on its own condition, evidence and affordability.
