Hublot Big Bang Unico Sky Blue: Know the Generation

Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Sky Blue puts colour into the case rather than leaving it only on the dial or strap. That makes the generation and material particularly important when comparing listings. The name by itself is not enough to establish size, movement or configuration.

The original article, published in 2020, described a 42 mm watch. Hublot’s own 2020 Sky Blue announcement instead describes a 45 mm case; its separate 42 mm announcement is dated May 2023.[36][37] A buyer should resolve that difference before relying on any copied specification.

Start with the reference and release

Ask for the full reference, stated case size and photographs of the offered watch. Compare those with manufacturer material for that particular version. Do not combine the case size from one release with the movement or accessories from another because their colours look similar.

Hublot’s 2020 description discusses pale blue and white, a fabric strap with a ceramic deployant clasp and a second strap in blue-and-white rubber.[36] That records the launch configuration. It does not mean every pre-owned example still includes both straps or its original clasp.

The 2023 release specifically identifies Sky Blue ceramic in a 42 mm format.[37] If that smaller version interests you, ask to try it rather than treating it as a cosmetic change to the older watch. Case size can affect the whole wearing experience.

Colour should not distract from condition

Request close photographs of the ceramic bezel, case edges, screw areas and lugs. Ask about any damage, repairs or replaced case components. A mark that is difficult to interpret from an image should be assessed in person or by a qualified specialist.

Ceramic should not be treated as indestructible. The practical buying question is what has happened to this case, not how a material performs in a general description. Avoid accepting a vague ‘excellent condition’ label where detailed views would answer the question.

Inspect the strap separately. Look for its current condition, usable adjustment range and correct fit at the case. Ask which straps are included and whether replacements are original or aftermarket. A second strap in a launch photograph is not evidence that it accompanies the offered watch.

Demonstrate the chronograph

Ask the seller to demonstrate the stopwatch function following the instructions for the exact reference. Check that the hands behave and reset as expected, and clarify whether any operational issue has been disclosed. Do not experiment with a flyback operating sequence unless the model’s instructions confirm it.

Request service records and identify the workshop or manufacturer documentation behind them. An attractive transparent dial does not provide the same information as a movement assessment. Confirm what the purchase terms say about the chronograph, rather than assuming a general warranty covers every concern.

Try the complete wearing setup

Wear the watch with its actual strap and clasp. Check the case position, comfort at the wrist edges and whether the clasp sits naturally underneath. Look at the colour in ordinary daylight and alongside the clothes you wear most often. Promotional lighting can make pale tones seem stronger or softer than they are.

Make the price comparison specific

Compare current RM asking prices only after separating the 45 mm and 42 mm releases and accounting for condition, accessories and service evidence. A lower headline price may reflect a different generation or incomplete setup.

Choose the Sky Blue for its particular appearance and wearing experience, not an assumption that a colourful or unusual release must appreciate. A clearly identified watch with an understandable maintenance path is the better starting point.

Compare watches and ask questions

Browse the Hublot collection for current listings. If an existing watch is part of your decision, read about trade-in options and request an individual assessment. Availability, condition and included accessories vary by watch.
