The 2020 Rolex Oyster Perpetual update was a change to the time-only collection, not an introduction of professional dive watches. It brought a new 41 mm model, updated the 36 mm model and added a notably varied dial palette. Separating that news from the year's Submariner and other launches makes it easier to understand the watches now offered pre-owned.[61]
The range changed at the larger end
The Oyster Perpetual 41 replaced the 39 mm option in 2020. At launch, it joined 28, 31, 34 and 36 mm sizes.[61] That historical range is not a promise that every size or dial remains available from a manufacturer or independent dealer today.
The removal of the 39 left buyers with a different choice of proportions. If you like that discontinued size, compare it with the 36 and 41 on your wrist rather than assuming the replacement is a direct fit.
A movement update for the 36 and 41
The new 41 and updated 36 received calibre 3230, with an approximately 70-hour power reserve.[61] It is a time-only movement. The presence of Oyster Perpetual wording in a longer Rolex model name does not mean that a Datejust or Submariner Date uses this same calibre.
A longer reserve can be convenient if you alternate watches over a weekend. It still describes performance from a suitably wound and functioning watch. For a pre-owned example, ask about current operation and maintenance rather than relying only on the launch specification.
Colour was part of the change
The launch introduced bold dial choices alongside more restrained options.[61] A coloured dial can give a familiar case a different personality, but the reference, size and original configuration still need checking. Not every colour was necessarily offered in every size.
When looking at listings, request photographs of the actual dial and ask whether it is original, a service replacement or aftermarket. Popularity does not authenticate a colour, and a bright dial is not automatically a limited edition.
Case size is not the whole story
The 41 and the discontinued 39 have different overall proportions. A detailed contemporary comparison considered their wearing experience rather than treating the catalogue diameter as the only meaningful change.[60]
Have the bracelet adjusted for a proper trial. Check how the lugs sit, whether the clasp lies comfortably and how easily the dial can be read. The best size is the one that works with your wrist and routine, not the one most frequently recommended online.
Distinguish this range from other Rolex names
The Oyster Perpetual collection offers hours, minutes and central seconds without a date display.[27] The Datejust is a separate named range with a calendar function. The Submariner is a separate dive-watch family. Keeping those distinctions clear prevents incorrect movement and water-resistance claims from being copied between models.
Ask the seller to place the exact reference on the invoice. A family nickname or a dial colour alone is not a sufficiently detailed description of a high-value purchase.
Buying a launch-era example now
A watch first sold around this update may have accumulated years of wear. Inspect the bracelet, clasp, crystal and case edges. Request service records, details of replaced parts and current assessment of water resistance if you intend to use it in water.
Manufacturer warranty eligibility and any remaining period need checking for the individual watch. A separate seller warranty should be explained in writing, including its exclusions.
