The 2020 Rolex Submariner update changed the stated case size from 40 to 41 mm, revised the case and bracelet proportions and introduced newer movements. Those changes matter, but they do not make every earlier watch an inferior purchase. The better question is which generation, configuration and individual example fit your needs.[68]
Compare like with like first
For a straightforward no-date comparison, look at the earlier 114060 and the later 124060. The 114060 arrived in 2012; the 124060 followed in 2020.[68] Comparing these two keeps the dial function broadly consistent while you assess the changed generation.
If you want a date display, compare corresponding Submariner Date references instead. The 124060 uses calibre 3230 without a date, while the later steel Submariner Date 126610LN uses calibre 3235 with a calendar display.[1][56] Model names should not be allowed to obscure that difference.
The larger number does not decide fit
The 2020 case has slimmer lugs and a slightly wider bracelet than the earlier no-date generation.[68] Together, these proportions affect how the watch sits. A one-millimetre catalogue increase is not a complete description of comfort or visual balance.
Try the watches with bracelets adjusted to your wrist. Check clasp position, sleeve clearance and whether the case stays stable when you move. If the earlier model already feels right, there is no requirement to upgrade merely because the new model exists.
Consider the running reserve
Rolex specifies approximately 70 hours of power reserve for calibre 3230 in the 124060.[1] This may be helpful if you put the watch aside for a day or two. It is still a specification tied to a fully wound, functioning movement.
For a used watch, ask whether the actual operation has been checked. A newer reference with neglected maintenance may be a less suitable purchase than an older example with clear service records. Generation and condition are separate questions.
Date or no date is a daily preference
A date display can be convenient at work. A no-date watch offers a simpler face and one fewer indication to reset after it stops. Decide which matters to your routine rather than treating the date as an automatic increase in desirability.
Have the seller demonstrate the setting procedure for the chosen reference. Do not assume every Rolex crown position or calendar operation is identical. Clear instructions are part of responsible ownership.
Compare the condition as carefully as the specification
Look at the case edges, bezel insert, crystal and bracelet. Ask about polishing, replaced parts and service history. Check spare links and the function of the clasp and adjustment system.
Evaluate the documents and written warranty terms. A full set can be desirable, but it is not a substitute for assessment of the watch. Likewise, watch-only status needs explanation rather than an automatic authenticity verdict.
An upgrade should justify its full cost
If you already own a Submariner, compare the actual trade-in offer with the purchase price of the replacement. Include any fees and maintenance needs. Do not assume a higher retail price means your existing watch has gained the same amount in resale value.
A preference for the newer case, longer reserve or a different dial can justify a change. If those benefits do not matter to you, keeping the watch you enjoy is a reasonable decision.
