Luxury Watch Prices: Why They Do Not Always Rise

Luxury watch prices do not follow one permanent direction. More importantly, ‘price’ can mean a new retail list price, a dealer’s asking price, an auction result or the amount an owner receives when selling. A claim that prices are growing is incomplete until you know which of those measures it describes.

Celebrity stories, vintage references and future-price predictions are different kinds of information. None establishes what a particular watch would sell for today, and none should be used as a promise that buying now will produce a profit.

Decide which price you are comparing

A retail list price is not necessarily a resale price. An advertised pre-owned price is an invitation to transact under particular terms, not evidence that a sale occurred at that amount. A dealer’s offer to buy your watch is another measure again.

If you are planning an upgrade, request both sides separately: the RM purchase price of the next watch and the RM offer for your current one. Only then evaluate the difference payable. A trade-in proposal should not hide how either watch has been valued.

Exceptional auction results are not ordinary benchmarks

Phillips records the sale of Paul Newman’s own Daytona reference 6239 in October 2017 as a major historical auction result.[28] Its documented ownership makes it different from a similar-looking watch without that provenance. Do not use a celebrity-owned example to price an ordinary reference.

The same caution applies to unusual vintage dials. The auctioneer’s account of the miner’s Submariner 5512 focused on its rare 3-6-9 dial and family history.[19] A reference number alone does not recreate those attributes.

An auction figure may also include buyer’s premium. Before comparing it with another transaction, establish the reporting basis, date and costs. Headline numbers lose meaning when those details disappear.

Compare like-for-like watches

Match the reference, case material, dial, bracelet and approximate age. Then examine condition, polishing, service evidence and included accessories. Two watches bearing the same model name can be substantially different purchases.

Be specific about originality. Ask whether a component is original to the watch, a manufacturer service replacement or aftermarket. If the seller cannot explain the description, do not assume the cheapest or most expensive example must be the best value.

Compare several recent, relevant offers rather than one old screenshot. Date the evidence you keep. A saved listing with an unavailable watch and no completion record does not establish an achievable selling price.

Work backwards from a sale

Ask what you would receive after fees, delivery, insurance and any work required to complete a sale. Consider how long you can wait and whether you need a direct purchase offer or can accept consignment. These are different arrangements, not interchangeable labels.

If a service is needed, obtain an assessment before assuming a future sale will cover it. Condition and maintenance expenses belong in the decision from the start.

Set a buying rule that does not need a forecast

Choose a watch you can afford to keep if selling takes longer or the offer is lower than hoped. Record the condition and terms at purchase, retain documents and seek suitable maintenance advice. These steps improve clarity; they do not guarantee appreciation.

At Prestige Watch, use current listings as a starting point and ask for an example-specific RM quote. A careful comparison is more useful than the unsupported claim that prices are still growing.

Compare watches and ask questions

Browse the Rolex collection for current listings. If an existing watch is part of your decision, read about trade-in options and request an individual assessment. Availability, condition and included accessories vary by watch.
