Rolex Explorer II 216570: A Practical Reference Guide

The Rolex Explorer II 216570 is worth understanding as a watch with a purpose: its additional hand and fixed 24-hour bezel make a second time reading possible without a rotating timing bezel. Its appeal is not dependent on a celebrity connection or a claim that collectors have overlooked it.

For a buyer, the important questions are whether the 42 mm format fits, whether the display suits your routine and whether the individual example has a clear condition record. A celebrity association would not answer any of those questions.

Where the reference fits in the story

Rolex launched the Explorer II in 1971. The manufacturer describes a 2011 restyling that increased the case to 42 mm, followed by a further case-and-bracelet redesign in 2021.^[14] The 216570 belongs to the earlier 42 mm generation; do not identify an Explorer II by diameter alone.

The model’s original day-and-night function addresses environments where daylight does not provide an ordinary daily rhythm, such as caves or polar regions.^[14] That origin explains the fixed 24-hour scale more clearly than describing the watch as simply another steel sports model.

Read the extra hand correctly

The additional hand makes one circuit over 24 hours and reads against the fixed bezel. Rolex’s brochure for the 216570 states that its calibre 3187 supports a second time zone and independent rapid setting of the main hour hand.^[35]

Ask for a demonstration. Learn which hand is indicating local time, which is indicating the other zone and how the date changes when adjusting the local hour. A function that looks familiar in photographs can still require a setting routine you have not used before.

The fixed bezel is different from the GMT-Master II’s rotating bezel. Choose based on the display you prefer and the time-zone information you need, rather than treating the two models as identical alternatives.

Keep movement generations separate

The historical 216570 brochure gives approximately 48 hours of power reserve.^[35] Rolex’s later Explorer II documentation describes calibre 3285 and approximately 70 hours for the newer generation.^[14] A used 216570 should not be advertised with that later movement’s specification.

Power reserve describes timekeeping autonomy when sufficiently wound; it is not a service interval or a promise about the performance of an untested used watch. Ask what checks have actually been performed on the offered example.

Inspect the case, bezel and bracelet

Try the watch after sensible bracelet adjustment. Check how the lugs sit, whether the clasp is centred and whether the size remains comfortable with a sleeve. A watch can be legible and attractive yet still feel too broad on your wrist.

Examine the engraved bezel, case edges and bracelet under good light. Ask about polishing, replacement components and prior repairs. Request photographs that show wear instead of only flattering angles. White and black dials should be assessed as individual configurations, not assigned automatic superiority.

Buy the example, not the reputation

Request the exact reference, current RM price, available service evidence and a list of documents and accessories. Confirm whether water-resistance testing is recent enough for your intended use; the original rating is not proof of present sealing condition.

The Explorer II’s useful display and distinctive fixed bezel are sound reasons to consider it. Unsupported claims about rarity, future appreciation or celebrity ownership are not. Choose a clear, comfortable example whose condition and terms you understand.
