Your First Luxury Watch: Four Practical Choices

A first luxury watch should suit the days you actually live, not just the photographs you save. Start with a comfortable budget, then compare fit, functions and the condition of individual examples. The four options below offer different routes into ownership. None guarantees appreciation, and none is right for every wrist.

Start with the whole ownership budget

Leave room for bracelet sizing, future servicing and an appropriate insurance arrangement. A lower purchase price can lose its appeal if the watch immediately needs mechanical work or a replacement strap. Ask what the sale includes, what has been checked and which warranty terms apply to that particular watch.

Try the watch with your usual clothes. Check whether it clears a shirt cuff, whether the clasp sits centrally and whether the case shifts when you move your hand. Diameter alone does not tell you how a watch will wear.

Rolex Submariner 114060: a clear, sporting choice

The 114060 is the earlier no-date Submariner generation, introduced in 2012. Its black dial and ceramic bezel provide a straightforward alternative to watches with additional calendar or travel functions.[68] Choose it because you like that layout, not because someone describes it as the safest investment.

On a pre-owned example, examine the bezel insert, bracelet condition and case profile. Ask about service history and whether parts have been replaced. Compare its feel with the later 124060 before deciding that a newer reference is necessarily better for you.

Tudor Black Bay: choose the exact reference

Black Bay is a family, not a single specification. The M7941A1A0RU-0003 has a 41 mm steel case, a 200-metre water-resistance rating and the COSC- and METAS-certified MT5602-U movement.[29] Those details describe this reference, not every Tudor with Black Bay on its dial.

It is worth trying if you prefer a pronounced dive-watch design. Pay attention to thickness and bracelet adjustment as well as the dial. Browse the Tudor collection to compare listed configurations, then confirm which examples are available for viewing.

Cartier Santos 100: a different shape and presence

A square watch gives you another way to judge proportion. The Santos 100 WSSA0006, often described as Carbon, is steel with an ADLC coating. It is not a solid carbon case. Contemporary coverage gives its dimensions as 51.1 by 41.3 mm, so it deserves an in-person fitting rather than comparison by one diameter figure.[63]

Look closely at coating wear, the strap and the buckle. Ask for clarification if a listing mixes dimensions, materials or dates from another Santos generation. A distinctive appearance is useful only if the watch feels comfortable through an ordinary working day.

Rolex Datejust: compare configurations, not labels

The Datejust offers a different starting point if a date display matters to you. Case size, dial, bezel and bracelet change its character substantially. A smooth-bezel example can feel quite different from a fluted-bezel watch even when both listings say Datejust.

Choose the configuration you enjoy reading and wearing. Then compare like-for-like examples on condition, documents and the scope of any seller warranty. Do not assume a full set makes a watch genuine or that missing papers make it counterfeit.

Make the purchase specific

Read the Rolex buying-check checklist for the limits of visual inspection. Ask Prestige Watch about the exact reference, current availability and written sale terms. Call +60 10 330 3333 or WhatsApp the team before arranging a viewing.
