The Rolex Submariner reference 124060 is the no-date model introduced with the 2020 Submariner update. It combines a black dial, black ceramic bezel insert and an Oystersteel case. Its appeal is straightforward: a dive-watch layout without a calendar window. It should not be confused with the Submariner Date, whose date display and movement differ.[68]
The essential specifications
Rolex lists a 41 mm case, a unidirectional 60-minute bezel and a 300-metre water-resistance rating for the 124060. It uses the self-winding calibre 3230, with an approximately 70-hour power reserve.[1] These figures describe the reference's design, not a condition guarantee for any used example.
The no-date dial also means there is no date to reset after the watch stops. If that simplicity matters to you, it is a practical reason to prefer the 124060. If you use a date display frequently, compare a Submariner Date rather than expecting this reference to provide one.
What changed from the 114060
The 124060 followed the 114060, which had brought the ceramic bezel and broader-lugged case to the no-date Submariner in 2012. The 2020 release introduced a revised case profile, slimmer lugs, a slightly wider bracelet and the newer movement.[68]
Although the stated diameter increased, fit is not determined by diameter alone. The proportions of the lugs and bracelet influence how the watch sits. Try the two references side by side if possible, especially if you already know the earlier model well.
A change in reference is not a reason by itself to sell a comfortable watch you enjoy.
Understand the bezel's purpose
The 124060's bezel is designed to display elapsed minutes and turns in one direction.[1] It is not the same mechanism or display as a GMT-Master II travel bezel. When assessing a pre-owned example, have the seller demonstrate its operation without forcing it.
Check the insert for chips and impact marks. Ceramic can resist surface scratches without making the component immune to damage. Any loose or abnormal operation needs investigation; it is not a complete authentication result on its own.
Bracelet fit changes the ownership experience
Rolex specifies an Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock safety clasp and Glidelock adjustment.[1] Check that the clasp closes securely and that adjustment works smoothly. Confirm how many removable links are included rather than assuming a boxed watch will fit every wrist.
Look at the case profile and bracelet finish under ordinary light. Ask whether polishing or replacement parts have altered the watch from its original configuration. Disclosed cosmetic wear may be preferable to an example whose history is unclear.
Do not mistake the depth rating for current testing
A 300-metre design rating does not establish the current condition of an older watch's seals. Water resistance can be affected by gasket ageing or impact to components that provide the seal.[42] Ask about service history and recent pressure testing before planning to swim with the watch.
Leave movement inspection and any case opening to a qualified professional. Obtain written findings and agree on responsibility for resealing where internal assessment is required.
