Rolex’s 2020 Arrivals: Submariner and Oyster Perpetual

Rolex’s 2020 arrivals are now useful as a dividing line between watch generations, not as breaking news. The Submariner range received a new case and movements, while Oyster Perpetual models introduced movement changes and memorable dial colours. Knowing which generation you are looking at makes a pre-owned comparison more meaningful.[42][8]

Launch coverage and dealer-demand anecdotes are not a present-day price guide. A buying enquiry needs the exact reference, actual condition and a current asking price in RM. Use the historical release details to identify what changed, then evaluate the watch being offered now.

What changed in the Submariner

Rolex’s 2020 announcement describes a redesigned 41 mm case and a broader bracelet for both the Submariner and Submariner Date. The time-only version adopted calibre 3230; the date version brought calibre 3235 to the range.[42] These are different movements, not one specification that applies to every Submariner.

The new colour combinations included an Oystersteel Submariner Date with a black dial and green bezel, and a white-gold version with a black dial and blue bezel.[42] A bezel colour alone is therefore not enough to identify case material or reference. Ask to see the whole configuration, including bracelet and clasp.

The manufacturer lists approximately 70 hours of power reserve for calibres 3230 and 3235.[11] That may suit a wearer who rotates watches, but the practical condition of a used movement still needs checking. A published factory specification is not a recent test result for the watch in front of you.

What changed in the Oyster Perpetual

The Oyster Perpetual’s coloured dials became one of the most recognisable parts of the 2020 launches. Rolex’s later 2023 bubble-dial announcement explicitly refers back to the five hues introduced in 2020.[8] Popular colour nicknames should not replace the reference and actual dial description.

For movement comparisons, Rolex identifies calibre 3230 in the Oyster Perpetual 36 and 41, while smaller versions use a different calibre.[12] Do not assume all sizes share the same movement or power reserve. When comparing examples, separate the size decision from the colour decision.

Why a wrist trial matters

A diameter is only one part of fit. Case shape, bracelet sizing and how the watch sits on your wrist all affect comfort. Try the watch with a sleeve if that is how you will usually wear it. Check whether the clasp is centred and whether enough links are included to achieve a comfortable adjustment.

Neither the newer case nor the older generation is automatically the better purchase. An earlier example with a clear condition record may suit you better than a newer one with unclear repairs or heavy refinishing. Choose the proportions you prefer rather than buying a year label.

Separate the launch story from today’s transaction

A 2020 announcement cannot establish current stock, waiting times or resale value. Ask for dated photographs of the offered watch, the service record available and an itemised list of accessories. Confirm whether a manufacturer warranty remains valid and what separate seller terms apply.

If a watch is being described as rare or discontinued, ask which precise reference or dial configuration that statement concerns. Then compare genuinely comparable examples. The point of understanding the 2020 changes is to make a clearer decision, not to predict rising prices from an old release.

Compare watches and ask questions

Browse the Rolex collection for current listings. If an existing watch is part of your decision, read about selling your watch and request an individual assessment. Availability, condition and included accessories vary by watch.
